An air cleaner's job is just that. It cleans the microscopic particles from the air so your lungs don't have to. If you've ever seen particles dancing in a ray of light, you've seen about 1% of what makes up our air. The remaining particles are microscopic and depending on their size can remain airborne. The heavy particles settle out as dust in about twenty minutes or less. Middleweight particles (from 1 to 5 microns) may take up to twenty minutes to settle out.
Lightweight particles(less than 1 microns) can remain permanently in the air. The smallest particles are the ones of greatest concern. These are the ones that are breathed in and settle in our lungs. A good air cleaner can remove 94% of the particles (.5 or larger) from the air that passes through it.
Oh and yes, since the heavy particles settle out quickly you still have to dust. Sorry.
Don't settle with a room air cleaner, have an air cleaner installed on your furnace that will filter the air as it heats and cools it.
