Furnace Service FAQs

Can I improve my furnace’s efficiency without replacing it?

  • There are a few ways you can lower your furnace’s energy consumption.
    • Program your thermostat to lower the temperature setting when you’re away or at night when you’re sleeping. The Department of Energy states that you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting.
    • Clean your furnace filter clean, and perform annual maintenance.
    • Replace your existing PSC motor with a new energy-efficient ECM motor (link to future page on ECM Motor Replacement). An ECM motor won’t reduce gas usage but will save you money on electricity each month.

How often should I service my furnace?

A general rule of thumb is to check your furnace filter each month and replace it as needed. Manufacturers recommend having it cleaned annually by an HVAC technician.

Do I need to clean my gas furnace?

Yes. We recommend cleaning your gas furnace once a year to lengthen its life cycle and prevent future malfunctions.

What are the different kinds of furnaces?

The four types of furnaces are gas, oil, electric, and propane. Due to energy costs in Illinois, most homeowners have gas or electric furnaces.

How long will my furnace last?

With proper installation and maintenance, your furnace should last over 15 years To maximize the life of your furnace, choose a trusted professional to install it and perform routine maintenance checks.
